Does your cloud infrastructure resemble Steven Spielberg? Or Oprah Winfrey? How about Bono? Or is it more of an Ugg or a Zog? Wait – back up: What could a company’s cloud installation possibly have in common with pop icons or cavemen?

Gartner Catalyst Conference 2018Basically, five things, according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This “pyramid” of needs outlines the patterns through which human motivations typically move: Physiological, Safety, Belonging and Love, Esteem, and Self-Actualization. At the lowest levels, humans meet their most basic needs – the need for human survival and the need for safety and security. As you move up the scale, you begin to meet the need for social belonging, self-esteem, and at the very top, the need to reach your full potential.

Theoretically, only a handful of people have reached that highest level, although a few – folks like Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Bono – have achieved the full exploitation of their talents, capabilities and potential.

If you translate that hierarchy of human needs into the cloud world, you might find levels like:

1) Compute, storage and network

2) Security & recovery

3) Integration & stability

4) Cost optimization

5) Serverless computing

At the bottom of the pyramid, you can run your business by simply moving your application to the cloud with no regard for the new, underlying cloud services. But at the top of the pyramid, serverless computing represents the ability to run your application anywhere, at any time. This is the “nirvana” of cloud computing that few companies achieve, but that any company can attain with the right approach.

Unlike human psychological evolution, the technology industry is moving fast. And even if you’ve already made the jump to serverless, you can’t stop reaching for that next level of needs. In other words, the top of the pyramid constantly increases in height – so you can’t ever stop climbing.

To find out how to reach the top of the pyramid, join Sungard Availability Services at the Gartner Catalyst Conference on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 3:15 p.m. for our Solution Provider session called Resiliency for Every Stage of your Multi-Cloud Journey.

Whether you’re a seasoned public cloud veteran or just now considering a push to virtualization, your digital transformation needs more than just a high-level strategy. Join Sungard AS in exploring the features and functionality required to deliver resilient, recoverable solutions. And maybe you’ll learn how to turn your cloud infrastructure into the Oprah or Bono of your industry.
