It’s been said that in the aftermath of the communications revolution, everything goes global within a matter of seconds – whether it be a political tweet, a video of a woman laughing at her Chewbacca mask, or an announcement about a ‘conscious uncoupling.’ That’s not always a good thing. But when it comes to recognition for innovation, that’s usually a very good thing.
This happened recently at Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS) when our Recovery Execution System was recognized in India at the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) Awards for Continuity and Resilience Innovation. The BCI India Awards recognize the outstanding contribution of business continuity professionals and organizations living in or operating in India or the surrounding countries.
Sungard AS manages the complete end-to-end process of recovering companies from any IT disruption or disaster. Historically, the recovery industry has managed things through a collection of manual processes prone to all the risks that come when processes are done “by hand.” Recognizing this problem – and opportunity – Kaushik (Vice President of Global Operations and Architecture) and his global team set upon a radical transformation. They engineered a reinvention of the recovery process end-to-end.
To accomplish this, the team understood that disaster recovery needed both architectural and infrastructural refinement to take Sungard AS’ service to the next level. They established a company-wide initiative to automate both the process of “discovering” what assets needed to be recovered and then recovering them at the time of test or disaster.
The result is a breakthrough, automated approach to recovery services called the Recovery Execution System (RES). RES replaces the highly manual, time consuming, and error prone process of recovery with an orchestrated and integrated set of automated processes.
AUTOMATING PROCESS SAVES TIME, MONEY
The RES initiative kicked off in June 2015, started live customer tests in July, and began implementation in December of the same year. By leveraging automated discovery, dependency mapping, and configuration management technologies, Sungard AS addresses the challenges of automatically documenting an accurate production blueprint and identifying lifecycle changes.
In addition, RES delivers the following benefits:
- RES is technology-platform and recovery-strategy agnostic (an industry “first”); it delivers a cloud-like experience across any hybrid IT architecture, be it legacy or virtual, physical or distributed technologies, without having to move workloads to the cloud.
- It eliminates costly and error-prone manual maintenance/execution of recovery procedures for tests and actual disaster events.
- RES reduces infrastructure build-time by an average of 70 percent.
- It also reduces overall recovery time by 65 percent.
- RES increases the success rate of DR testing from an industry average of 35 to 90 percent.
- In addition, RES reduces overall Recovery Time Objective (RTO) by an average of 50 to 60 percent.
- Finally, RES significantly reduces service delivery costs.
In addition to the BCI India awards, Sungard AS was honored with a Gold Stevie Award (honoring Kaushik Ray as IT Executive of the Year for the teams’ work on RES) as well as a Silver Stevie Award for Best New Product or Service of the Year, Software – Cloud Storage & Backup Solution” category.
Sungard AS also won the 2016 HPE Awards for Innovator of the Year. This award honors organizations who successfully leverage HP Software solutions to convert innovative ideas into results. Winning companies are celebrated for their successes and business transformation, as well as their willingness to share their expertise and best practices to inspire and motivate others.
Perhaps the biggest honor of all was the news that Kaushik Ray was named a 2017 Premier 100 Technology Leaders honoree by IDG’s Computerworld. He is among 100 leaders highlighted for their exceptional technology leadership and innovative approaches to business challenges. Ray was recognized for leading the charge to reinvent how disaster recovery (DR) is performed through RES.
At the end of the day, acknowledgement of RES and other innovative work by Sungard AS around the globe confirms our commitment to helping companies protect and recover their technology, no matter where they are based or how far they reach. And we don’t mind this news going viral – ever.
