When the U.S. men’s hockey team brought home the Olympic gold medal in 1980 after a stunning victory against the Russian team, the lives of the 20 young men were changed forever. Their coach, Herb Brooks, motivated his team not so much to win the gold medal as he did to simply do their best. Then he cheered them on to try harder. And after they gave him every ounce of energy, he asked for even more. Swift put it like this: “At a time when international tensions and domestic frustrations had dampened traditional American optimism, the underdog U.S. Olympic hockey team gave the entire nation a lift by defeating the world’s top team, the Soviets, and ultimately winning the gold medal. Those youngsters did so by means of the old-fashioned American work ethic, which some people feared was disappearing from the land.”
